10 Important Tips on How to Gain Confidence as a Graphic Designer

Sometimes it’s hard to make up with losses when you lose a project. We all take the occasional confidence knock from time-to-time. But to see continued success in the graphic design industry, it’s important to know the right techniques and implement it confidently.

In this blog, we will have a look at ten things one can do to gain confidence as a graphic designer by implementing right skillset. These tips can work for experienced designers, as well as new designers looking to break into the market. Following these points can overcome any hurdle in graphic design projects.

1. Develop a Niche

The design market can be a crowded one. Don’t try to know everything. Develop a niche. If you are a great photo or an illustrator, go with it. Or maybe your specialty is print or developing a branding strategy.

Market yourself in a way that matches with your skill-set, and take on projects that make you work on things in which you are good at.

2. Acquire a New Skill

While finding a role is a great way to work on things you know well, gaining confidence along the way, learning a new skill and updating yourself can go a long way as well.

There are many graphic design institutes in India which offer various diploma and certificate courses in graphic design which can help you acquire new skills. Pick up some new graphic design software by joining online graphic design course in Photoshop, CorelDraw, Illustrator, InDesign etc. Identify something that interests you when you are looking for something new to try.
By developing a new skill, you will get better in all aspects of your work. You might even find that it makes you work more efficiently and creatively.

3. Be Honest About How Much You Can Do

One of the biggest and common problems in designers is that they commit on wrong things. “Sure, I can do that.” “Yes, I can have that in three days” Sound familiar?

Don’t make false commitments about your work to do more than you can handle. Be realistic about how long something will take to finish an assigned task. Be upfront about time and cost considerations with your boss or clients.

4. Take Feedback

It is important to give and receive feedback on a regular basis. Getting that feedback from design peers can be more honest about the design than from clients.

Sometimes clients may not like your designs because it does not match their ideas of what is desired, or it conflict with the brand requirements. But that does not mean a design is bad; it just means it did not match with their requirements. That’s when looking for unbiased feedback can be helpful. The design might be nice, even if it did not work for a particular client.

Join a meetup group in your city, post conversations on online forums or even chat with other designers and share ideas on social media. Receiving genuine feedback's is good for helping you grow as a designer.

5. Be a Part of Fun Activities

Doing same kind of work can be monotonous and stressful. By picking a project of your choice and interest will make you feel more in control, and in turn, confident. These jobs may not always be the highest paying. These can include work like creation or updating of a personal portfolio, blog, or business card design for a friend. This kind of fun activities make you feel great especially when your confidence might be shaken.

6. Design with an Aim

Your every design should not only be remarkable but also have a reason for each design decision you make and be able, and willing, to back it up. Become well-versed in design and its principles, so you can explain the logic of why something is pleasing to the eye. And to master such theories it’s always recommended to join a graphic design institute which focuses on commercial art and visual grammar classes.

Designing to make something attractive is not particularly useful. But making specific choices that contribute to a certain project can go a long way. By explaining such theories to a client, you will become more confident in your knowledge of design theory, and able to support your choices.

7. Set Timelines and Work on It

At the beginning of every project, set realistic timelines and goals. Check on frequent intervals how much you have accomplished and don’t be afraid to celebrate success. These small victories can make you feel like you really are getting somewhere on a project.

Slowly and steadily, set and work toward long-term goals. Where do you want to be in ten years? What kinds of projects do you want to handle? Where do you want to work and live? Always try to look for jobs and projects that will help you get closer to the things which you find important.

8. Update Your Portfolio

Designers tend to judge themselves by the last completed project. If it goes well, things are good; if it goes unwell, it’s leaves a bad mark.

By keeping an up-to-date and complete project portfolio, you can regularly keep track of successes and things you are proud of. It’s a good idea to get on a portfolio update schedule so that you can see your own accomplishments on a regular basis. Make a point to add your best new projects to your portfolio on frequent basis. You can also join a professional graphic design institute which not only offers best graphic design courses in Delhi but also focuses on creating or updating your project portfolio.

Also try to be active on a public portfolio platform, such as Behance, where users can comment and favorite some of your work.

9. Participate in Design Competitions

Most designers don’t complete a project thinking about contests, but creative and design competition can be another great way to help build your confidence.

They also help you plan, work toward deadlines and better pay attention to and follow specific rules. This planned structure can be a good exercise for graphic designers that sometimes think a little outside the lines. And a win always makes anyone feel good.

10. Get Rightly Paid

Nothing boosts your confidence like getting paid for your work. Whether you work in a company, have a strong client base, or design on a freelance basis, getting paid is a sure sign of success.
The creative business can be a indecisive one, and failed projects sometimes come with cut rates and refunds for work. Take a minute to applaud yourself for every project that gets finished on time and paid in full. Use your successes and failures as examples of how to work moving forward.

There are a lot of things that can shake a designer’s confidence – a new job, new client, unsuccessful project, conflicts in taste or style with a client – but what will make or break your career is how you recover learn from your experience and move forward.

If you have faced failure in one project, don’t lose hope, get out there and try again. It is good to analyze yourself and understand what you are good at can help any graphic designer get better in their work and gain confidence.

What other things have you tried to boost your confidence level as a graphic designer? Share your tips and techniques in the comments, so that other people can learn from it and implement them.

Important Check Points to Keep in Mind While Choosing Best Animation Institute

The hype of animation & VFX is in serious demand, the field of animation is booming and companies are putting more focus on professional animators than ever before. This is the reason a lot of institutes are already providing training in diploma and certificate animation course in Delhi. So, what you should do to choose right one, who not only provide you the right education but gives you the right kick start to your career as well as provide placement. You have to be smart while choosing the right institute for your career.

It is always recommended to have a checklist of the things you want from best 3D animation institutes in Delhi which is more than just getting a job, it's about learning and understanding the craft of animation on a deeper level, it's about the industry connections you will make through alumni and instructors, that's probably the biggest advantage animation institutes have over self-taught artists, ask any animator working in the industry today and most will tell you they found their first jobs by joining a professional institute offering job oriented courses in animation.

The things you should look for in an animation school are:
  • Does the program teach all aspects of the art of animation?
  • How much experience does the instructors have in the animation industry
  • Does the school give training on latest software?
  • Does the school have a good alumni network?
  • How many students in the past have been successfully placed?
  1. Does the Program Teach all Aspects of the Art of Animation?
An institute with a legitimate animation course should start with a foundation in drawing. If you want to become an animator in true sense of the word there's no getting around drawing, every animator needs to start off with art and sketching classes. These sessions consist of still-life drawing, figure drawing, perspective drawing, thumb nailing, sketching, story boarding, color theory and other art fundamentals.

With hard work and dedication even if you can't draw you can be taught to draw and still live out your dream as an animator. So, look for an animation institute that teaches foundation classes like sketching, color theory, art history, character design, rotoscoping, script writing and so on.
  1. How much experience do the instructors have in the animation industry?
It is an important aspect in choosing an animation school because instructors with animation industry experience will know what animation studios are looking for when they are looking to hire a new animator and the latest techniques used in the industry.

There are a lot of institutes out there who hire recent graduates as instructors in their animation classes while these instructors can teach you animation lessons but lacked the real-time exposure to give you those little insider tips that only someone with years of experience in the industry would know. So, when you speak to the admissions advisor of whichever animation institute in Delhi you are interested in be sure to ask instructors prior animation industry experience.
  1. Does the school give training on latest software?
Before joining any institute make sure that you will get trained in various aspects of advanced 3D animation skills and explore the world of creativity with latest animation software like Autodesk Maya, 3Ds Max, Fusion, Adobe After Effects, Cinema 4D, Mocha, Mudbox etc. Also, discuss in detail the course curriculum with the course advisor and check whether important topics which you want to study are available in the course or not.
  1. Does the training institute have a good alumni network?
Attending an animation school with a good alumni network can beneficial in future, these networks are those connections that you make while you are in school and the alumni network are part of those connections. When speaking to an admissions counselor make sure to ask about the passed-out student’s details and see their project work. Get in touch with alumni on social networking sites and take a feedback and how joining long-term diploma animation courses can be beneficial. A good alumni network can be your ticket to landing a job after you complete your course.
  1. How many students in the past have been successfully placed?
Placements give students the opportunity to gain skills specific to their subject or industry of choice as well as the employability skills required for real-life work. It also enhances their knowledge of an industry or sector, allowing them to make better-informed decisions about future career choices. Make sure that whatever institute you will be joining should regularly conducts placement workshops to prepare students to face job interviews & aptitude tests.

They should also be taught skills like resume writing, presentation skills & time management, etc in workshops so that they become completely industry-ready by the time they complete their course. Also, try to find out how many passed out students have been placed successfully in the industry.

At the end which animation training institute you choose to attend just remember to put all your hard work to get best results. Animation industry requires a lot of hard work and dedication to achieve something and if you don't have that same drive and dedication you won't make it. You have to live, eat and sleep animation. And one of the best animation institutes like ADMEC not only focuses on above-mentioned checklist but also encourages you at every step to follow your dream and become a successful animator.

What are the uses of Smart Objects in Photoshop (PSD)?

A very powerful function within Photoshop CC are Smart Objects. Smart Objects were originally created for the use of graphic design. Smart Object is a useful function for photography. An important function of smart object is to allow non-destructive editing not only of the images but also of filters applied to an image.

In this article, we will try to get to know the use of smart objects in PSD in detail and take a look at some things that we can do with Smart Objects. Smart Objects are layers that contain image data from raster or vector images. Smart Objects preserve an image’s source content with all its original characteristics, enabling us to perform non-destructive editing to the layer.
  1. What are Smart Objects

Adobe defines a “Smart Object as a special layer that can contain both raster and vector image data while preserving the image's source content and all original characteristics”. This Smart Object layer allows for non-destructive editing of the source content. The scope of Smart objects is indefinite because any object, any logo, any layer or even a photo taken with a camera can all be converted into a smart object.
  1. How to create a Smart Object

Creating smart objects is actually very easy. To do this, we need to select the layers in the Layers Panel, right click and choose create Smart Object. Smart objects can also be created by using the Place command when bringing images, logos or other graphics into the Photoshop file from another location Smart Objects can be embedded into a Photoshop file, or linked from an external file. Linked Smart Objects have all of the advantages of those that are embedded, plus a few additional benefits.
  1. Use of Smart objects in Photoshop

With smart object, we can perform non-destructive transforms.
  1. You can scale, rotate, skew, distort, perspective transform, or warp a layer without losing original image data or quality.
  2. With smart object, we can work with vector data
  3. We can edit filters applied to Smart Objects at any time.
  4. Apply a layer mask that’s either linked or unlinked to the Smart Object layer.
  5. With the introduction of smart objects in photoshop, it became possible to manipulate Smart objects without losing the original data and image.
  6. With smart objects, it is also possible to apply most effects without being rasterized.

CONCLUSION:

Smart Objects provide a solid base for designers today. The scope of designing software have hit large scale with the introduction of Smart objects. Almost all the possible functions of Photoshop can be applied on smart objects.

One’s creativity and innovations can go to any extend with the use of smart objects. In the earlier versions of Adobe Photoshop, we don’t find such a feature. But all the last versions of Photoshop have included this function in the Photoshop making it a very useful and productive Graphic Software for designers.
